Sailing on the Norfolk Broads
Sailing the Broads is a unique sailing experience and perfect for relative newcomers as well as ‘old hands’.
Basic instruction is given on arrival for raising and lowering of sails and masts, engine operation and safety briefing. Hourly further sailing instruction is also available at an additional cost for those needing to brush up skills. There is also the option for RYA training for complete novices wanting to try out sailing for the first time.
Broads sailing offers the chance to try out a ‘Gaffer’ for the first time or a Bermudan rig for those who prefer. All Broads yachts are fitted with suitable short shallow keels to enable easy and nimble tacking on the narrower river sections whilst still offering some exhilarating sailing on the open waters of the adjoining Broads.
Unique experiences include the chance to sail ‘Zoe’. Built in 1897, this is the only Victorian counter sterned yacht on the Broads. Alternatively, the Hunters Heritage Fleet date from the 1930’s and offer a truly special sailing experience with traditional oil lamps, gas cookers and no engines fitted on most of the fleet! Modern gaff rigged and Bermudan yachts available as well as the older heritage yachts giving all of the comforts of a modern well equipped yacht – perfect for family holidays.
Attractions include access to the quietest areas of the Broads by passage under some of the lowest bridges (including Potter Heigham & Wroxham). Under Potter Heigham Bridge is one of the Broad’s many hidden gems – the seal colony at Horsey Gap, only a 30 minute walk from the moorings at the National Trust Windpump (Horsey Mere).
There is up to 125 miles of cruising available on the Broads with a wonderful selection of waterside pubs and eateries to sample during the course of your holiday. You will also have the chance to see Norfolk Wherries under sail. There used to be over 300 of these vessels on the Norfolk Broads and were used to transport people and cargo from the coast to Norwich. There are only two remaining on the Norfolk Broads now, dating back around 122 years.
